The Charlottenburg Castle was built in the years 1695 to 1699 according to plans of the architect Johann Arnold Nering. It was initially thought as a small garden and pleasure palaces for the wife of Elector Friedrich III., Sophie Charlotte.
After the coronation of the elector in 1701 to the first king of Prussia and Sophie Charlotte to the Queen , the castle was enlarged by the architect Eosander von Goethe to a magnificent facility modeled after Versailles Castle. When Sophie Charlotte died in 1705, the castle and the village located nearby received their names. With the death of King Frederick I in 1713 the construction was stopped and continued under Frederick the Great in 1740. When the Castle was heavily damaged in World War II, the restoration took over two decades to rebuild.
The living quarters of Frederick I and his wife can be visited here. In the back of
the park stands the mausoleum of Queen Louise, the wife of Frederick II.
